reaction post: curse of the black spot

Not going to be my favorite episode of this series, I imagine, but I still enjoyed it, much more than I thought I would, actually.

THINGS I LIKED:

"Yo ho ho!...or does nobody actually say that?"

"My ship...automatically...noticed...-ish...that your ship was having some bother."

THE RETURN OF THE PLAID. I am all onboard the Plaid Agenda this series.

Let me just say: AMY'S TIGHTS. Good lord.

Oh my goodness. Rory's FACE, when the Doctor tries to encourage the pirates to laugh. Every time I watch this bit I lose it.

Drugged!Rory is my new favorite thing. Ever. EVER. Oh my goodness Arthur must've had a BALL filming that scene.

"EVERYTHING IS TOTALLY BRILLIANT, ISN'T IT?! Look at these brilliant pirates! Look at their brilliant beards."

"COMFY SOFA."

So he's had a fez, a Stetson, a Santa hat, a top hat, and now a pirate's hat. Can we please get him a sombrero and one of those piled-with-fruit hats before the series is out?

You breathe on that medallion, Doctor. Breathe the hell out of it.

"I've traveled far like you. Space can be very lonely. The greatest adventure is having someone to share it with you." <3 <3 <3

"RATS WAS ALL I COULD HEAR." Yeah, Rory, it's really not fair of the Captain to assume you're going to be able to understand anything he's saying. YOU GUYS AREN'T SAILORS.

Amy and the Doctor were willing to quite probably die on the off chance that they might possibly be able to save Rory. BECAUSE EVERYONE LOVES RORY.

"Goodnight, Doctor."
"Goodnight, Amelia."
"...You only call me Amelia when you're worrying about me."
"I always worry about you."
"...Mutual."
MY CREYS.

OTHER OBSERVATIONS:

It really bothers me the way walking the plank is portrayed in films and such. Even on a becalmed sea, that ship is still going to be rocking. A lot. There's no way you could balance on the end of a plank for that long that happily.

I dunno...Amy's swordfighting scene fell a little flat for me. I guess I shouldn't have expected to her to suddenly be a brilliant swordswomen or anything, but I felt like the "OOH SHE GOT TO USE A SWORD!!!" thing was kind of overhyped and then ended up just not being very exciting. Meh.

Also...did it bother anyone else that you could CLEARLY SEE the hook on Karen's harness connecting her to the rope she was swinging on? Like, it was BLATANT. They really couldn't make it any more subtle than that?

I kind of feel like the kid showed up a bit too late into the episode to avoid seeming too random. But he was a good actor -- I actually liked his character, which I wasn't expecting to.

...I've actually always imagined that the TARDIS kitchen was in the direction that the Doctor pointed! I WAS RIGHT! Also, I'm curious about the whole three bathrooms thing.

My sister made a good point...the Doctor uses his sonic to open the door, but...the sonic doesn't do wood...

Hee hee. I bet Matt had fun filming the scenes that essentially consisted of DESTROY ALL THESE PROPS.

Dawww. I like seeing Amy and Rory cuddling together in bed.

Damn you BBC America for cutting out the last little bit of the Doctor's conversation with Captain Avery about the star. I didn't see it until just now and him pointing to the Dog Star out of nowhere earlier made NO SENSE without this bit.

DON'T SHHH HER, DOCTOR, SHE'S TRYING TO COME AND TELL YOU ABOUT MRS. EYEPATCHY, THIS IS IMPORTANT.

I've seen some people wondering why the Doctor and the Captain didn't try harder to keep people back from the Siren. Honestly, to me it seemed like her singing had an effect on everyone, making them a little confused and hesitant. It was just much, much stronger on the people who were actually injured.

OH GOD RORY NO DON'T FALL INTO THE WATER NO NO NO NO NO

Wow. The Siren gave them all trachs and ventilators. Deja vu.

Also, can I just say that, holy crap, the emotional thruline of this episode pretty much broke my heart. WHY IS THIS SHOW ALLOWED TO DO THESE THINGS TO ME.

Amy...that's...that's not...you're doing CPR wrong. Like, really, really wrong. Like, he should NOT BE WAKING UP. (But I'm glad he did.)

QUESTIONS I HAVE:

So...did they actually explain WHY reflective surfaces turned into portals between worlds? Because if they did, I missed it...twice...

Um. WHAT THE FRAK, MRS. EYEPATCHY. WHAT THE FRAK. I have nothing else to say except for WHAT THE FRAKKING FRAK.

Okay so how come the Siren didn't put Amy, the Captain or the Doctor into those hospital bed/machines? Why did they wake up lying on the floor?

PREDICTIONS AND SPECULATION:

I don't have much for this episode, to be honest. blienky27  and I have developed something of a terrifying theory explaining the presence of Mrs. Eyepatchy, but aside from that, the only thing I can think of is to point wildly at the TARDIS pregnancy test again and make faint noises of speechless confusion.

Comments

I am still just hoping that all of these 'errors' - CPR DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY, the Sonic suddenly 'doing wood,' the FBI having access to ridiculously advance materials, etc - will all be explained later in some sort of big tie-in thing. Because I will be really sad if this is actually just some sloppy storytelling. I'm hoping it works like the 'continuity error' with the jacket in season 5, with the Weeping Angels.
"COMFY SOFA."

Lol, yes. And how he lolled his head back when he said it, haha.

the sonic doesn't do wood...

Yeah. I mean, technically, I guess it worked on the little metal latch on the door, but still.

You breathe on that medallion, Doctor. Breathe the hell out of it.

Kinky.

the Doctor uses his sonic to open the door, but...the sonic doesn't do wood...

I THOUGHT THE SAME THING. AND WASN'T THAT TECHNICALLY A DEAD LOCK? NO??

Some of your questions I just write it off as, "Well, that's scifi for you." As for the eye patch lady: WHO IS SHE?!?! WHAT IS YOUR TERRIFYING THEORY??
I'M NOT SURE I SHOULD SAY BECAUSE I'M ACTUALLY KIND OF AFRAID THAT IT MIGHT BE RIGHT AND IF IT IS I DON'T WANT TO ACCIDENTALLY QUASI-SPOIL IT FOR ANYBODY
PM???? I MUST KNOW!!
hmm yeah, I also got a feeling that there were plenty of little mistakes all over the place in this episode o.o the sonic screwdriver working on wood and such... but did anyone noticed that that other pirate, whome Toby injured cause he wanted to run away and who told Toby his dad was a pirate simply disappeared after that scene? no one's mentioning him after that at all... even when the Doctor and Captain are chasing the other guy for mutiny, he said 'she's not after me, she's after Toby and that scrawny looking boy (I assume he meant Rory xD)' but again, didn't even mention the third guy o.o
I hope/have a feeling though that it's gonna be a part of the story developement later on, but... who knows? o.o
oh and another thing I wanted to point out... isn't Rory basically 'plastic'? how can he drown then? o.o does his body still function normally or...? I got a bit confused about that too XD
You know, you're RIGHT, the boatswain did just kind of disappear. I wonder if he's just the victim of a deleted scene, perhaps...

As for Rory, he's actually not plastic anymore: when the Doctor rebooted the universe, everything went back to the way it was supposed to be, including Amy's parents being alive and Rory being back to his old, human self. He's still got the memories, of course, but he's not an Auton now. :)
hmm yeah, that or maybe it'll be one of the threads linking the final story?
like the 'bad wolf' one... or 'silence'... or the doctor with different outfit (a differently colored bowtie, if I remember correctly? not sure xD)
I hope so... cause I really wouldn't want to think it's just a result of the editors being sloppy or smth o.o

and about Rory... I guess that part kinda slipped my mind xD sorry xD it's been a while since I watched season 5 ^___^
